Technical Assistance:  Education, Training, and Outreach

CASE staff provided technical assistance through training, education in GIS applications, and outreach for natural resource managers.  The staff provided educational opportunities for a wide variety of cooperators including short courses, guest lectures, seminar and GIS laboratory courses in the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences and provided guest lectures for college courses in the Departments of Fishery and Wildlife Sciences, Animal and Range Science, and Geography.  Further, CASE staff have been invited speakers at professional meetings and developed, coordinated, and facilitated professional workshops.  Staff have served on six Masters of Science committees and provided GIS support to many other graduate students within the Departments of Fishery and Wildlife Science and Animal and Range Sciences.

Publication of CASE research is encouraged with staff authoring or coauthoring 13 publications in peer reviewed journals including Journal of Arid Lands, Journal of Raptor Research, Condor, Southwestern Naturalist, Western North American Naturalist, Risk Analysis: An International Journal, and Journal of Environmental Planning and Management.  In addition, staff have authored or coauthored chapters in books or proceedings such as Biodiversity, Ecosystems, and Conservation in Northern Mexico, 2002 Fire Conference: Managing Fire and Fuels in the Remaining Wildlands and Open Spaces of the Southwestern United States, and Sustainable Utilisation – Conservation in Practice.

Staff and graduate students have presented research at national conferences, regional conferences, agency briefings, and local conferences.  National conferences include the National Gap Analysis Program, The Wildlife Society, Ecological Society of America, American Malacological Union, Western Society of Malacologists, Conservation Biology, and International Association for Landscape Ecology.  Regional and state conferences include Joint Annual Meeting of The Wildlife Society (Arizona and New Mexico Chapters) and the American Fisheries Society, Annual Meeting of the New Mexico Ornithological Society, Western States and Provinces Deer and Elk workshop, and Southwestern Naturalists.  Local conferences include 13th Annual Biology Symposium Department of Biology New Mexico State University and Annual New Mexico State University Graduate Student Art and Science Symposium.

Although CASE emphasizes research, the staff provide technical assistance for a variety of university departments and professional organizations.  They have provided technical support for a regional conference, produced conference posters for university faculty, staff, students, and state and federal agencies, and assisted with the development of slide presentations for these same entities. Staff are involved in the peer-review process having reviewed manuscripts for Journal of Wildlife Management, Condor, Journal of Range Management, Journal of Raptor Research, Southwestern Naturalist, and BioScience.  The staff have authored and co-authored peer-refereed articles and chapters for ecological texts.
